My name is Linden Osborne and I’m a sophomore at Peoples Academy. I was interested in learning about childbirth and how I could pursue that interest after my education. I found Community Based Learning to fit my needs. Community Based Learning is a personalized process where students can explore an interest in the real world and shadow or intern in their field of choice. The structure of CBL is very flexible and fits to your needs. The only requirement is to show some sort of evidence of your learning whether that be journal entries, notes, pictures, etc. A budget is available for CBL to provide students with any resources they may need such as transportation services, equipment, or in my case, uteruses to dissect.

I had many different learning experiences throughout my CBL. I went to a birthing class with Vicki Rich and learned about the process of lactation and childbirth. I learned how to comfort a laboring mother and about the different interventions that may have to be performed during the process. I went to a career panel at CCV and learned about some of the career options available in Morrisville as well as careers in the field of health care. I shadowed at UVM medical center and I shadowed a midwife at Copley Hospital. I also attended an exhibition in Barre and presented my CBL and my experience. In addition, I conducted a lot of research in order to progress and further my learning.

Make sure you’re passionate about your interest. CBL is very self-motivated. Kim Laidlaw is there to show you the way and help you along in terms of feasibility with time management and budget, but you have to want it. No one’s going to push you along so it’s up to you to get what you want out of the experience.

A hands-on experience that will give you a good sense of what your interest looks like in the real world after your high school education.
